TIFAC-CORE in Telematics

Since the inception of VR Siddhartha Engineering College
in 1977, EEE department was catering to the
instructional needs of both EEE and ECE students. In
1986, the EEE department was trifurcated into EEE, ECE
and CSE Departments. Thus, the ECE department obtained
its separate identity in 1986. Upto 1990 the annual student intake at UG level of the
ECE department was only 40; in 1991 the intake was
enhanced to 60; since 2000, the intake is 120. The department has conducted a PG Program in M Tech
(Microwave Engineering) from 2002 – 2007 with an intake
of 18 each academic year. The Department has been
offering M Tech (Communications and Signal Processing)
from 2007 onwards. The
Department of ECE is now housed in a 3 storied building
with a carpet area of 2160 Square Meters. The cost of
the building is Rs 75 Lakhs. The cost of the equipment
in the laboratories is about Rs 149 Lakhs. It has
well-established insfrastructural facilities. The ECE department has 6 laboratories each housed in an
area of 154 Sq.m, Viz
Electronic Devices
Lab & Linear Integrated Circuits Lab, Analog & Digital Comm.
Lab, VLSI/CAD/Embedded Systems Lab, Micro Processor Lab,
Microwave & Optical Comm. Lab and DSP Lab. An exclusive computer centre is established for the
benefit of ECE students procuring state of the art
machines with an investment of 22 Lakhs. Major equipment in the department include 6 Nos. of
Microwave Test Benches costing Rs 6 Lakhs, 3 GHz
Spectrum Analyzer costing Rs 5.3 Lakhs, Graphics Work
Station costing Rs 2.5 Lakhs, Digital Communication
Trainers costing Rs 2 Lakhs, Fiber Optic Trainers worth
Rs 3 Lakhs and DSP Starter Kits costing Rs 1.5 Lakhs. Equipment servicing facilities are available in the ECE
Department. In this respect, the department helps other
sister institutions as well. Internet facility is made available to all the students
with free access through 1 GB fiber optic backbone
network-establishing connectivity to all computer centres of the college. A part of the central library, a department library is
maintained to enable the staff to have a quick
reference. The students of the department have established a
consistently high academic record for all these years
with more than 50% of them securing first class with
distinction. For the academic year 2007-2008, the pass
percentage was 98.6. They also secure university ranks
on regular basis. Several ECE graduates are occupying good positions in ISRO, DRDO, BEL, AIR, ECIL, WIPRO, INFOSYS, TCS etc.
Many have gone abroad for higher studies/employment.
Some of them are occupying the positions of status like
Professors/Directors in USA. Some students quality at
GATE with excellent scores and secure admissions at IITs
and other schools of higher learning for PG studies. For encouraging para technical activities, a
departmental students association SPACE an acronym for
Siddhartha Professional Association for Communication
Engineers has been established. Quiz programs, Group
Discussions, Guest lectures are conducted under its
banner to enlarge the horizons of the students beyond
the scope of the curriculum. The Department has established the practice of inviting
specialists from other reputed institutions to deliver
extension lectures on topics of current interest and
future importance to kindle the enthusiasm of the
students and staff. These experts are drawn from
educational institutions and industrial organizations of
repute. Some times the services of NRIs are availed
during their holiday trips.Educational tours are arranged for pre-final and final
year students to enable them visit various industrial
organizations. This step helps the students corroborate
what they have learnt in the classroom with what goes on
in industry. The students of the department are encouraged to
participate in the Student Paper Contests, Quiz Programs
and Technical Exhibitions organized by other Educational
Institutions and professional bodies like IETE, and IE
(I). The ECE Department has a contingent of 27 staff out of
which 2 Professors, 5 Assistant Professors and the rest
Lecturers. The Department is strong in R & D activity. The staff of the department is actively engaged in
research work.. Five staff are pursuing their Ph D
program. The department produced Eight Ph Ds so far. The
staff contributes positively for revision and updating
curriculum of NU. The staff are sponsored to participate in the Seminars,
Conferences and Short Term Training programs organized
by AICTE, ISTE etc to enable them update their knowledge
in the subject. The management has strong vision and always look forward
to extend the financial support for upgradation of
infrastructural facilities like Building space,
Laboratory Equipment, Library and Research facilities.
